What is a dental crown?

Dental crowns are caps that fit over damaged teeth. These caps restore your tooth’s shape and strength, while preventing further damage. Crowns can also be used to cover a dental implant, giving your smile a more natural appearance.

Dental crowns are usually made from porcelain, so they are similar in color to your teeth. Porcelain is the preferred material for crowns because it looks natural, is durable, and is stain-resistant.

How are dental crowns made?

Dental crowns are custom-made for every patient, so they fit comfortably and securely. Our dentists start by preparing the tooth by removing any decay and reshaping the tooth. Then, they take digital X-rays and impressions of the tooth, which are used to design the final crown.

What types of materials are used for dental crowns?

There are three types of materials used for dental crowns: metal, porcelain, and resin. Porcelain and ceramic crowns are the best options, because they resemble natural teeth the most. Metal crowns have discolouring and possible corrosion over time. Resin crowns are not as durable as other options.

What are the benefits of dental crowns?

There are several benefits to dental crowns. They can:

- Protect your natural teeth from decay.

- Strengthen damaged teeth.

- Improve the aesthetics of your smile.

- Restore a tooth with a root canal.

- Cover a dental implant.

- Replace a missing tooth.

How are dental crowns placed?

A dental crown is a hollow restoration that is custom-crafted to fit over a tooth. Once the crown is ready, it is cemented into place with a special dental cement. The type of cement used depends on the material the crown is made out of. We place dental crowns in two appointments. During the first appointment, we prepare the tooth for the crown and take impressions of the tooth and the surrounding teeth. The impressions are sent to a dental lab where the restoration is created. The restoration takes about three weeks to make, so we place a temporary crown on the tooth while this takes place. During the second appointment, we remove the temporary crown and cement the permanent one in place.

How long does it take to get a dental crown?

Dental crowns typically take two visits to complete, but the amount of time it takes to get your final dental crown can vary. During the first visit, your dentist will prepare your tooth for the crown. This includes removing any decay and shaping the tooth so that it will properly fit inside the crown. Then, your dentist will take impressions to send to the lab where they will create your dental crown.

While you wait for your crown to be completed, your dentist will fit you with a temporary crown. Once your permanent crown is ready, you’ll return to your dentist office. Your dentist will carefully remove your temporary crown and fit your permanent crown.

How long do dental crowns last?

Dental crowns typically last about 15 years. However, they can last for many years longer with proper care. With good oral hygiene, crowns can last a long time. However, dental crowns will not last forever. They can chip or crack, which will cause them to need to be replaced.

Dental crowns are custom-made caps that fit over an individual tooth. They are commonly made from porcelain, but are also available in metal, ceramic, resin, or a combination. Crowns may be used to restore a tooth’s strength or to replace a large filling. Dental crowns may also be used to cover dental implants.
